After exploring the heavier, more introspective corners of growing up across her forthcoming debut, Nieve Ella lets the lighter side of herself take over on new single ‘Romance Is A Desert’. A playful, sensual rush, the single arrives ahead of her debut album ‘How Long Will It Take?’, out 16th October via Artist Theory, finding Nieve trading self-doubt for something far more immediate: desire, confidence and the sheer pleasure of getting carried away.
“Romance Is A Desert is the light to the heavier, darker themes of the record. It’s the loving side of me, who is simply happy to exist,” explains Nieve. “I wanted a song that people could dance and feel good to. It’s reminiscent of a beach holiday or getting ready to go on a night out. It’s the feeling of being so in love that consequences don’t seem to matter, the only thing that’s important in that moment is that emotion. It’s sexy, it’s sassy, it’s fun.”
It arrives as the latest chapter in the story Nieve has been building around ‘How Long Will It Take?’. ‘Drive’ introduced a newfound swagger, ‘Bite Back’ turned that confidence into confrontation, while ‘Standing On A Pane Of Glass’ dropped into the emotional depths beneath it all. Produced by Jamie Rendle and co-written by Ella, Rendle and Finn Marlow, with mixing by Rob Kinelski, ‘Romance Is A Desert’ changes the temperature entirely.
A dreamy, synth-soaked indie rush, it’s the sound of letting yourself be seduced by a feeling, even when you know there might be consequences waiting on the other side. Beneath its hazy, playful surface is the same emotional complexity that runs throughout the album: pleasure tangled with uncertainty, confidence brushing up against doubt.

That tension is at the heart of ‘How Long Will It Take?’. Across eleven songs, Nieve explores identity, relationships and self-worth while navigating the messy reality of becoming an adult and feeling like everyone else has somehow got there first. Rather than offering easy resolutions, the album embraces the loops, false starts and unexpected turns that come with growing up, finding hope in simply continuing forward.
Throughout the writing process, an image kept returning to Nieve: an endless staircase. It became both the visual language of the album and an emotional core, a metaphor for chasing adulthood, confidence and success while never quite feeling like you’ve arrived. Every milestone simply reveals another flight ahead.
Speaking about the album, Ella says, “This record is crafted out of the pieces from the bottom of my heart. It’s about coming to terms with the fact that growing up isn’t a single action, it’s a long-term journey. It’s a roller coaster of loops, false starts and sharp turns - when you finally think you’ve figured it out, you realise you’re back at the start and waiting to go again. I’m so ready for it to be heard now, it’s the final part of my healing process.”
This autumn, Nieve will take ‘How Long Will It Take?’ on her biggest headline tour to date, beginning in Glasgow on 4th November before travelling through the UK, Ireland and Europe, including a headline show at London's O2 Forum Kentish Town on 17th November.
